Is frozen yoghurt healthier than ice cream? (And the 6 other curly questions we get asked all the time)

When you’re thinking about quitting sugar, chances are you’re going to have a few (or many!) questions.

“Is it a fad diet?” “Can you eat fruit?” “What’s wrong with sugar anyway?”

Our I Quit Sugar: 8-Week Program Forums, Facebook page and blog are full of questions about the white stuff. Here are seven of the trickiest ones we’re asked all the time.

1. You asked: Isn’t it dangerous to cut out an entire food group?

We answered: We would never ban legitimately recognised food groups. That’s why our recipes include grains, proteins, dairy and fruit. But sugar ain’t a food group!

As for the dangers of a sugar-free diet? Research has shown that quitting sugar does no harm. Unless of course you consider any of these seven benefits cause for concern!

2. You asked: Can I eat bread? Doesn’t it have sugar?

We answered: Most bread is low in sugar, so you won’t have to give up your morning slice of toast when you quit.

While carbohydrates do eventually convert to sugar, it’s glucose, not the havoc-wreaking fructose type.

However, in keeping with our focus on Just Eating Real Food (JERF), we favour varieties with as few additional ingredients as possible, or making your own from scratch.

3. You asked: How can you eat all that fat without actually getting fat?

We answered: We would never recommend gorging on the stuff, but when you include a sensible amount of of certain fats in your diet, it’s hard to overdose.

That’s because good fats, like the kind in avocado, nuts and even butter, can provide satiety and flavour. Meaning you need a whole lot less to stay a whole lot more satisfied.

4. You asked: Isn’t low-fat frozen yoghurt healthier than ice cream?

We answered: You would assume so, wouldn’t you?

The truth is, like many processed foods, low-fat frozen yoghurt can be notoriously high in sugar to make up for the flavour and texture that’s lost when fat is removed.

Did you know these foods are also hiding more sugar than you realise?

5. You asked: If you’re all about JERFing why don’t you eat honey? It’s natural!

We answered: Putting aside the fact that sugar is also “natural” (and yet not particularly good for you), the reality is that most commercial honey is heavily pasteurised – which removes almost all the minerals in the manufacturing process.

Plus, honey actually has a similar fructose content to regular table sugar. Which is why we avoid this sugar substitute and opt for alternatives like rice malt syrup instead.

6. You asked: Bananas. I don’t know what to believe anymore. Please explain?

We answered: With the exception of a period on the 8-Week Program when we suggest you cut out all sweet stuff to break your addiction and recalibrate, we encourage eating a few pieces of low-fructose fruit daily.

And while all fruit can form part of a healthy sugar-free diet (dried fruit and juices not included) we recommend some options over others to maximise their health benefits.

Think more berries, kiwifruit and pears, and less mango, watermelon, grapes and bananas.

7. You asked: It might be okay for single people who can afford coconut oil, but how on earth can I quit sugar with my family?

We answered: This question is common among those who worry that quitting sugar is expensive (it’s not) or requires fancy ingredients (it doesn’t). Or that they will never convince their kids to go sugar free. You can!

Just ask Erin, who made her family’s sugar-quitting journey look deliciously easy.
