If you’ve been diagnosed with prediabetes, your doctor may have given you the hard word to lose a few kilos.
But don’t panic!
We recently read an article in The New York Times and were surprised to discover that the recommended amount of weight to lose to reverse prediabetes is only around five to seven per cent of your body weight. That’s good news!
And there’s no need to jump on a crazy crash diet either! Here’s how you can help keep your weight (and diabetes) in check naturally…
Cut the sugar.
We know we bang on about this a lot, but cutting the sweet stuff not only naturally aids weight loss, but it can improve insulin sensitivity as well. Research shows that too much sugar can lead to prediabetes as it affects your body’s response to insulin production.
On top of this, the regular consumption of soft drinks and sugar-sweetened bevvies have been linked to type 2 diabetes.
Lowering your sugar intake and swapping sugary sweetened drinks for water (or even kombucha), will help to keep your waistline in check and improve insulin resistance too.
Get your greens.
It’s no secret that upping your intake of veg will help keep you healthy long-term, but turns out leafy greens can also stabilise blood sugar levels. In fact, last week, broccoli sprout was announced as the newest wonder veg that can improve blood glucose levels in adults with type 2 diabetes.
So, why not get ahead of the game and up your leafy green intake now? Throw a handful of spinach into your scrambled eggs or pop a bit of grated zucchini in your casserole. Your bod will thank you for it.
Spice up your life.
Not that we needed another reason to LOVE cinnamon, but spices such as fenugreek and cinnamon are proven to naturally lower your blood sugar and improve insulin sensitivity.
Next time you want to add some flavour to your food, don’t reach for the pre-made sauces – try spicing it up instead.
Keep active.
To form a healthy lifestyle you need both diet and exercise and while staying active helps to keep your weight down, studies show that physical activity can also improve insulin sensitivity. When you get your blood pumping, blood glucose levels can drop due to using the glucose for energy. We love to get a little active every day, even if it’s just a brisk morning walk!
If diabetes is a concern for you or your family, please consult your GP.
