While there are undoubtedly tons of sugary products lurking on supermarket shelves, it’s often the items we least suspect that are filled with the sweet stuff…
And, we’re not talking about cookies or cakes here either! Many products that are marketed as being healthy or natural, are unfortunately, anything but!
We decided to do some digging at our local supermarket to uncover 10 of the sneakiest sugary offenders…
1. Sanitarium Up & Go Gluten Free Vanilla (250ml).
Despite boasting a 4.5 out of 5 on the Health Star Rating system, we think these drinks are anything but healthy. Not only are these drinks swimming with vegetable oils, stabilisers and additives, they’re also chock-full of sugar – 18.8g to be exact – not really what you want to be sending your kids to school with.
SUGAR TOTAL: Just over 4 teaspoons of sugar.
2. Go Natural Berry Frugos (30g).
These fruity snacks are marketed as “all natural” on the packet but we’re not so sure that “Glazing Agent (904)” is, in fact, natural?! Just a 30g serving of these frugos comes in at a whopping 20.5g of sugar.
SUGAR TOTAL: Nearly 5 teaspoons of sugar.
3. Super Nature Super Foods Chicken Pad Thai with Rice Noodles (350g).
The labelling on this frozen meal makes it look fairly promising with lots of words like “super foods” and “taste the goodness” but a quick flip to the other side of the packet and the ingredients list is as long as your arm. And, there’s around 13g of sugar in there too. Not ideal.
SUGAR TOTAL: 3 teaspoons of sugar.
4. Bellis Apricot Bar (45g).
This small apricot snack bar looks pretty unassuming and can often be found in the health food section of your supermarket, but guess what the first ingredient listed is? Sugar! Not so healthy after all. In fact, there’s a whopping 26.7g of sugar in this little bar.
SUGAR TOTAL: 6 teaspoons of sugar.
5. Powerade Mountain Blast (600ml).
We’ve all been guilty of chugging down a bottle of one of these electrolyte drinks – especially following weekend sport as a kid. And, while we knew that these drinks weren’t that great, we were shocked to discover that this one in particular contains a whopping 35g of sugar!
SUGAR TOTAL: 8 teaspoons of sugar.
Just to put this in perspective, that’s two teaspoons more than the suggested daily intake for a woman and one teaspoon shy of the recommendation for men!
6. Vaalia Kids Strawberry Yoghurt pouch (140g).
According to the packaging, not only is this yoghurt pouch perfect for lunchboxes, but it’s also “packed with goodness”. What this kids yoghurt is also packed with is sugar! There’s around 15.5g of sugar in this one, but bear in mind that roughly 4.7g is naturally occurring lactose, so the added sugar content sits around 10g.
SUGAR TOTAL: 2.5 teaspoons of sugar.
7. Belvita Chocolate Breakfast Biscuits (50g).
While we opt for a veg-packed smoothie, or scrambled eggs for brekkie, it seems that others reach for chocolate breakfast biscuits. While these try to say that they’re made with wholegrains and designed especially for breakfast, they’re also filled with a bunch of less-than-stellar ingredients and 13.8g of sugar.
SUGAR TOTAL: 3 teaspoons of sugar.
8. Tasti Smooshed Brazen Berry Wholefood Balls (34.5g).
The ingredients list for these bliss balls might not look too bad, but there’s actually a huge amount of dried fruit and apple juice concentrate used in these which sends the sugar content skyrocketing. For a 34.5g serving, you’re looking at about 16.8g of sugar.
SUGAR TOTAL: 4 teaspoons of sugar.
9. Weis Dairy Free Dark Chocolate and Coconut Bar (80g).
At first glance, these ice blocks look like they could be promising – if they were made from coconut milk and cacao they’d be winners – but our hopes were dashed when we scanned the ingredients list – which was also super duper long – and saw that just one of these ice blocks contains 19.7g of sugar.
SUGAR TOTAL: 4.5 teaspoons of sugar.
10. Dorset Cereals Spelt Muesli (45g).
Spelt-based muesli sounds harmless enough, but this box of brekkie food was extremely disappointing thanks to its ingredients list and the fact that it has 12g of sugar for a super small portion of only 45g.
SUGAR TOTAL: 3 teaspoons of sugar.
