While you probably already realise that eating tons of sugar isn’t good for you, have you ever stopped to consider why that is?
If you haven’t managed to quit sugar just yet, here is what you NEED to know before you kick it to the curb. And trust us, after you read these facts, you’ll be ready to give it the flick!
- On average, Aussies are consuming around 14 teaspoons of sugar a day. That’s 5110 teaspoons a year! The WHO (and IQS) recommends consuming around 6–9 teaspoons per day.
- Sugar is addictive and can lead to stroke, heart disease, liver disease and abdominal obesity – just to name a few.
- The sweet stuff can also contribute to premature ageing and has been linked to the development of type-2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome!
- Sugar is great at hiding in plain sight as it goes by a number of sneaky aliases. In fact, there’s more than 70 different names for sugar, so keep an eye on the ingredient list!
- No added sugar is not the same as zero sugar. In fact, a recent study found that 48 per cent of products labelled as “no added sugar” still contained huge amounts of the sweet stuff!
- 14 to 18-year-old boys consume up to 38 teaspoons of sugar daily, which works out to be around 160g… every day! In 12 months, that equates to more than 58kg of sugar!
- Around 1 in 2 kids in NSW drink sweetened drinks on a regular basis!
- In 2012 alone, Aussies purchased 1.28 billions litres of sugary drinks – with Coca-Cola being the most popular at 447 million litres. An Olympic sized swimming pool holds around 2.5 million litres of water, so a billion litres of soft drink would fill more than 400 Olympic swimming pools – yikes!
So, who’s ready to quit sugar now? Well, you’ve come to the right place! Our newest Program called Kickstarter is specifically designed for those who are yet to dip their toe into the low-sugar life. Kickstarter allows you to get a taste of the IQS lifestyle with seven-days worth of meal plans, support and sugar science!
