6 healthy changes you can make RN to kick off 2018

Written By Unknown on Wednesday 3 January 2018 | 10:01

As soon as January hits, New Year’s resolutions are often at the forefront of many people’s minds…

But, we’re not a fan of the restrictive nature of resolutions. We prefer making healthy tweaks as needed – no matter the time of year. So, ditch your resolutions and try setting a few healthy intentions instead, to kick off your 2018 on the right foot.

1. Incorporate mindfulness into your daily routine.

Don’t get put off by the stereotype that mindfulness is only for meditating yogis – anyone can do it! This simple practice might not seem like much, but it can really have an impact on your whole day. Mindfulness is about staying present in the current moment and not letting your mind – or things around you – steal your attention away. Research has even linked mindfulness to a reduced risk of relapse with depression. Not to mention, a more positive emotional state. While everyone has their own way of practising mindfulness, we’ve written some helpful tips on how to do it here.

2. Eat breakfast everyday.

We think that brekkie is the most important meal of the day as it sets you up for success and helps to combat pesky sugar cravings. Eating breakfast has also been found to boost brain function as well as alertness and concentration. So, if you constantly skip your first meal, why not try starting your day with some eggs and avo and see how you feel?

3. Quit sugar!

Ditching sugar is a healthy change which has a huge impact on your health! Our 8-Week Program guides you through the process of quitting the sweet stuff – we support you through the whole thing and provide you with eight weeks of seasonal and nutritionist-developed meal plans which are designed to wean you off sugar. And, the results are amazing – hello clear skin, stable energy levels and weight loss.

4. Hydrate.

It might seem insignificant, but drinking an adequate amount of water everyday is super important. A whopping 50–75 per cent of your body is made up of water – depending on your age and gender – so you must keep hydrated otherwise you’ll likely experience headaches, fatigue and brain fog. Plus, water can help with everything from constipation to weight loss, so get a reusable water bottle and chug away!

5. Make healthy food swaps.

If you’re looking for an easy way to cut the crap out of your diet without much effort, this is it! When you’re out grocery shopping, get in the habit of reading nutritional labels and swap out products which contain added sugar and preservatives for ones that don’t. For example, if you’re a fan of fizzy soft drink, try switching it for kombucha. Not only is kombucha great for your gut, but our fave brand, Remedy, boasts just  0.1 grams of sugar per 100ml – a much healthier option than your standard cola. We’ve rounded up a bunch of healthy swaps which you can find here.

6. Move your body.

While laying on the lounge watching Netflix for hours on end might feel great, it’s not doing your health any favours. While exercise is vital for your physical health, it also greatly impacts on a myriad of other areas of your health including sleep. Exercise has been proven to help ease insomnia and busting a move outside exposes you to sunlight, helping to regulate your melatonin levels. This means you’ll be more alert during the day, and sleep more soundly at night. So, get outside and go for a walk!
