But if you feel like you’re currently dying (anyone?), don’t worry, the side effects will pass. Promise.
We’ve previously talked about just how addictive sugar can be (as addictive as cocaine, in fact), so it can take a while for your system to detox. But it the meantime, here are the best ways to ease those pesky withdrawal symptoms…
1. Drink more water.
Headaches can be one of the worst (and most painful) withdrawal symptoms. Put simply, headaches occur as your body goes through a sugar-detox, and they could be a sign that your liver needs a helping hand at flushing your system out. Boost your water intake to help ease headaches and to flush out any sugary build up. If drinking water doesn’t tickle your taste buds, add some lemon to help ease any liver inflammation, or try one of these tasty tricks!
2. Sleep it off.
If you find you’re waaaayyyyy sleepier than before, don’t stress – you’re not alone. That’s just your body trying to rebalance and stabilise your blood sugar as it’s probably used to receiving a regular sugar rush. Aim for at least seven hours shut-eye every night, and don’t feel guilty about having a nap in the day in you need too.
3. Take a bath.
Are you Little Miss Cranky Pants at the moment? We promise you’re not turning into the Grinch! As sugar can induce the release of dopamine and trigger pleasure, you may well be feeling a little more irritable. Combat those mood swings by taking a relaxing bath – maybe even splash a lil’ calming lavender oil in there too!
4. Befriend coconut oil.
If it’s the cravings that are driving you bonkers, there are plenty of things you can do to drown out the sound of the Tim Tams calling your name. Try eating a spoonful of coconut oil (or nut butter) to crush those cravings with just one bite. Plus, the healthy fats will satiate you until your next meal.
5. Go for a stroll.
While exercise might be the last thing you feel like doing, it can be a lifesaver! Not only will a light stroll get your blood pumping and aid in the detoxification process, but it can help release endorphins too, so you feel on top of the world. Not to mention, it will keep you away from the chocolate…
6. Load up on veg.
Make sure you’re getting your 7–9 serves of veg in every day! Vegetables will help crowd out any cravings, plus, they’re packed with naturally occurring antioxidants to ensure you’re supporting your bod with the right stuff.
7. Love your gut.
Changes in your diet can confuse your gut a little and you may find yourself bloated, gassy or, ah… on the loo a bit more frequently. Try adding some gelatin into your diet to support your good gut bugs, and keep up your fibre intake (hello, veggies) to keep everything moving along smoothly.
