- New World has just announced they will be banning plastic bags by the end of 2018.
- Following an online BagVote, the supermarket found that a huge number of customers supported a complete ban of single-use plastic bags!
- The supermarket giants will be giving away two million reusable bags to kick off the change.
This morning a major New Zealand supermarket, New World, has announced they’ll be saying goodbye to single-use plastic bags by the end of 2018.
More than 171,200 people voted in an online poll, with the majority asking for a 10 cent plastic bag charge to be put in place.
Foodstuffs chief executive Chris Quin however, wants an alternative that won’t end up in landfill. “We believe the answer lies in long-life reusable bags.”
This summer, New World will be giving away two million reusable bags to kickstart the change, as well as collecting voluntary donations to go towards environmental causes like Sea Cleaners.
Another win for #BanTheBag! Would you support a complete ban on plastic bags at your local supermarket?
