Why your brekkie should be sugar-free

Written By Unknown on Monday 4 September 2017 | 13:01

We’ve all heard that breakfast is the best way to start the day!

But, while you may think you’re doing something great for your health by reaching for that cereal – did you know you could max your daily sugar intake before you even step out the door in the morning?

Here’s why choosing a sugar-free brekkie is the way to go…

Energy levels.

After not eating all night, it’s important to refuel so as not to feel sluggish and lethargic during the day. Build your perfect plate with a mix of carbs, protein and healthy fats to keep you sustained right through till lunch!

Cognitive function.

When your mum encouraged you to eat a decent brekkie before school, she was on to something! Eating breakfast boosts cognitive function, mental alertness and concentration, so it’s super important to get your kids to tuck in too.

Weight control.

As soon as you eat breakfast, you kickstart your metabolism. In fact, an observational study found that skipping breakfast was associated with not just being overweight, but an increased risk of obesity! While this doesn’t mean that skipping breakfast automatically leads to weight gain, it could mean you’re likely to eat more during the day because you didn’t satisfy your hunger first thing.

Fight cravings.

Speaking of satisfying your hunger, research shows eating breakfast can help fight those pesky cravings too. The study also found that those who ate brekkie had higher levels of dopamine – the “happy” hormone too – so dig in!
