Cholesterol Lowering Weet-Bix: Not too flash for your health…

Written By Unknown on Wednesday 13 September 2017 | 19:21

We’ve previously explored easy ways to lower your cholesterol naturally, so quite frankly, Weet-Bix’s latest product baffles us.

After conducting a clinical trial, Sanitarium has harnessed the power of plant sterols to bring down your “bad” cholesterol levels “by up to nine per cent in four weeks”.

Interestingly, plant sterols are also found in vegetable oils and if you know us, you’ll already be aware of our firm stance against those… none for us, thanks.

On top of this, Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) have changed their code around plant sterols to coincide with the release of this new product. Previous FSANZ regulations only permitted a maximum of one gram of plant sterols per serve as eating more than three grams a day was found to have no further benefit.

“Cholesterol Lowering” Weet-Bix contains two grams, double the previous regulation so therefore, if you eat more than two Weet-Bix biscuits, you’ll actually be over your daily limit of plant sterols.

If you couldn’t already tell, we’re not too happy about this latest creation, and neither is our mate David Gillespie who had this to say on his Facebook page:

Their new “Cholesterol Lowering” version is loaded with vegetable oil. It is of course endorsed and promoted by the Heart Foundation.

The irony is that while this expensive junk will undoubtedly lower your cholesterol if you are foolish enough to consume it, the science says that adding oils like this to the food supply will in fact INCREASE your risk of death from heart disease and INCREASE your risk of death from other causes (principally cancer).”

We agree! If there are ways to lower your cholesterol naturally, why would you need to add another product to the mix?
