Banana peels have so many uses, from whitening teeth to removing warts… but would you eat them?
This is the third article in our ‘save from the bin’ series, where we delve into what’s safe for your plate – and what really should go in the bin.
Instead of throwing away all the add-ons around the main fruit and veg, let’s uncover the secret nutrition hiding in these scraps.
Next up… banana peel!
Bananas are possibly the most consumed fruit in the world with over 100 billion being eaten every year – and turns out, many countries eat the peel too.
While they might not seem appealing to munch on, they’re high in vitamin B6 and B12, as well as magnesium for a healthy sleep cycle and potassium for electrolyte function.
To get the most of your ‘nana, blend the peel into your smoothie, or fry or bake them in a little coconut oil and cinnamon to make banana peel chips – the longer you cook them the crispier and easier to chew they’ll be.
If that’s not for you, rub the inside of the peel on your mossie bites or use them to polish your shoes before you bin them. Get peeling!
