- Hobart is definitely at the forefront of the war on waste – first banning plastic bags in 2013, followed by some eateries banning the use of plastic straws, and now? They’re saying goodbye to plastic containers too.
- This comes as no surprise with a third of Hobart’s food retailers already opting for compostable packaging.
- The ABC three-part documentary War on Waste is being praised as the catalyst for this decision.
Another win for sustainability!
Hobart City Council voted earlier this week for the introduction of an environmental by-law that will phase out single-use plastic containers and utensils by 2020.
For now, all plastic containers will be replaced with similar biodegradable cartons, but the city’s ambition is to have commercial-grade compost bins installed around the city to facilitate the recycling of these new containers.
Good on you Hobart for leading the way in the war on waste! Which city should be next?
