We all know someone who hates coriander with a passion.
But when you’re a coriander lover through and through, it seems almost inconceivable that someone wouldn’t want to sprinkle it all over everything.
Coriander, or cilantro, seems to spur a love/hate reaction stronger than liquorice, Brussels sprouts and Vegemite (wait, what? We love all of these too!). So what’s going on there?
Well, according to science, there’s good reason for the aversion. A survey of 30,000 people identified two genetic variants linked to the taste and smell perception of coriander.
Or the OR6A2 gene, which is thought to be inherited. If your parents hate coriander, it’s likely you will too.
While we have no plans to stop using coriander in our recipes, if you have the hater gene, feel free to substitute with spinach or another fresh herb. Thai basil would go well with our tasty Thai chicken burgers. Or, you know, leave it out.
