How many times have you watched a shampoo commercial and thought, “I want luscious locks just like her!”
You may not realise it, but there’s more to hair care than just the products you wash it with – your hair is a reflection of what you eat.
Here are our fave foods to munch on to improve the health of your hair (and two you should stay away from!)
If your hair’s thinning, try red meat.
Iron deficiency can trigger hair loss or thinning due to the hair follicle not getting enough blood supply to flourish. Boost your iron levels with red meat or, if you’re vegetarian, try dark leafy greens like spinach and even beet leaves!
For stronger hair, nibble on cheese.
Protein isn’t just for building strong muscles – your hair is made of it too! When you don’t eat enough protein your hair starts to dry out and break. Nosh on dairy products like cheese, or meats like chicken and fish for stronger strands.
For a sleek shine, up your salmon intake.
Oily fish is packed with omega-3 which keeps your scalp and hair from drying out. Increase your intake of salmon, sardines and even avo to ensure your hair is hydrated and healthy.
To speed up the growing process, try Marmite or Vegemite!
Yeah, weird we know! But they’re both high in folic acid which boosts the rate your body tissue grows – including your hair. Smother some on sourdough for brekkie. Yum!
Stay away from…
Sugar.
The sweet stuff actually messes with the other vitamins and minerals in your bod, making it harder for all the beauties above to work their magic.
Artificial sweeteners.
Artificial sweeteners (especially Ace K) have been linked to thinning hair, so spare a thought for your mane next time you’re reaching for a diet bevvy!
