Should sugar tax include sweets?

Written By Unknown on Monday 15 May 2017 | 17:57

  • Action on Sugar is calling to extend the sugar tax to include all sweets, not just soft drinks.
  • Confectionary makes up at least 9% of kids’ diets.
  • The UK have already implemented a sugar tax for soft drinks starting next year. Win!

It already includes soft drinks. But should the sugar tax include confectionery?

News just in! Action on Sugar (a UK based public health group) are pushing for the next government to implement the sugar tax on all confectionery (finally!).

Graham MacGregor, chairman of Action on Sugar, says that a sugar levy on sweets and chocolate will “ensure maximum impact to help tackle the obesity and type 2 diabetes crisis”. And we certainly agree!

The UK has proven progress is possible, introducing a sugar tax on soft drinks early next year. But a recent survey revealed that two-thirds of UK consumers already believe that the sugar tax includes confectionery. This begs the question, why not go the whole-hog and tax ALL high sugar foods?

We’re with ya Action on Sugar! Would you like to see the sugar tax on confectionery?
