How to stay sugar-free when visiting the States

Written By Unknown on Thursday 18 May 2017 | 18:02

Ah, America. The land of the free and the home of… SUGAR.

If you live in the states or you’re just visiting on holiday, you may find it near impossible to successfully maintain your sugar-free lifestyle.

But don’t worry – we’ve got a real life sugar-free American to guide you through!

How to order sugar-free without just having a salad.

Stick to the “sides” menu. American portions are astronomical compared to Australia and the UK. So just ordering two or three “side” dishes is a great way to save cash and your health!

Plus, sides tend to be based on the JERF principals, rather than loaded up with sugar and other processed guff. Depending on the type of restaurant, side dishes can include green beans, slaw, potatoes, zucchini or rice.

Best grocery store options.

If you’re visiting bigger cities in America, you’ll have plenty of options when it comes to finding a healthy place to do your grocery shopping. Top brands we recommend are Whole Foods, Safeway, Earth Fare, Albertsons and Trader Joe’s.

For those of you heading to more rural places, we’d suggest supermarkets like Publix, Ingles and Kroger. Your fresh produce selection, as well as allergen-friendly selections, will be better.

But don’t let the store name fool you! Just because it’s considered “healthy” store doesn’t mean the products are going to have any less sugar.

When in doubt, JERF!

As always, if you’re torn with what foodie decision to make, remember… Just eat real food. Stick to whole foods – fruits, veggies and proteins.

If you do have to go the box, always read your nutrition label and stick to the products with the shortest ingredients lists (and sugar content!). If in doubt, check out our US specific guide for reading food labels
