Can chocolate really get you “in the mood”?

Written By Unknown on Monday 13 February 2017 | 15:48

Remember those old cartoons when a character would drink a love potion, have their heart beat out their chest and immediately fall for whoever they next laid eyes on?

Well, aphrodisiacs aren’t like that. Sorry. In fact, scientists are still pretty undecided as to whether aphrodisiac foods appear to work because of a placebo effect or simply because cooking food for someone is always attractive.

Still, these five aphrodisiac foods have some science behind them to suggest that they do, indeed, increase libido (you know, if you’re already looking to get in the mood). Just don’t expect to be Austin Powers after eating them!

1. Chilli.

It makes sense, doesn’t it? Chilli would be your go-to food if you want to get hot and sweaty. The active component, capsaicin, may also improve blood flow. It’s common for people to find pleasure in eating these hot peppers.

2. Maca.

Often sold in powdered form, this nutty root vegetable is excellent for men.  Studies have shown that maca may increase sperm count, motility, seminal volume and possibly sexual desire.

3. Oysters.

One of the best-known aphrodisiacs, folk used to think oysters stimulated libido because of their shape (you know what we mean… let’s not go into it).

But in 2005, scientists discovered that oysters are actually rich in rare amino acids that increased sex hormones. No wonder Casanova ate up to 50 oysters for breakfast!

4. Chocolate.

Chocolate is known to increase serotonin (happiness hormones), which is pretty important for sex drive. It may also improve blood flow… though, to be honest, who cares when chocolate is one of the most romantic foods of all? Just make sure it’s 85 per cent cacao or more (or make your own).

5. Vanilla.

We picked up this tip from founder of OVVIO Organic Tea, Anthia Koullouros, who told us vanilla beans were traditionally prized for their aphrodisiac qualities. Indeed, one study shows that vanilla is one of the most attractive scents to men.
