Put another shrimp on the barbie (+ 6 more healthy BBQ recipes)

Written By Unknown on Tuesday 24 January 2017 | 21:21

There’s nothing quite like a BBQ – that slightly chaotic mix of charred meat, sunshine and paper plates – to bring people together.

With these long summer days, there’s never been a better time to fire up the barbie… and hey, if it rains you can crank up the grill inside, too! Here are seven recipes to make your BBQ the best in the neighbourhood.

1. BBQ Prawns with Smoky Garlic Dressing.

Make like an Aussie and throw another shrimp on the barbie (we actually call them PRAWNS though). The punch of smoky, garlicky sauce takes it all the way to Crocodile Dundee levels of awesome.

2. Homemade BBQ Sauce.

What’s a BBQ without BBQ sauce? Skip the added-sugar versions and go for Sarah‘s naturally sweet sauce instead.

3. BBQ Chicken with all the Crispy Bits.

Yes, you CAN cook a whole chicken on the BBQ. With lots of crispy, charred skin and refreshing salsa verde, you’ll be the star of the cook-up.

4. Tempeh + Papaya Satay Skewers.

These juicy skewers are sure to go down well with the vegetarian crowd. Veggie tip: remember to cook these first so you don’t get any meat juice on them.

5. BBQ Pulled Mushroom Sanga.

Already contaminated your hot plate with meat gristle? You can please the vegetarians with these AMAZING “pulled mushroom” sandwiches, complete with a dousing of our Homemade BBQ Sauce.

6. Kanga Bangas with Grilled Peach, Corn + Watercress Salad.

We know this recipe calls for roo sausages, but you can use whatever bangers you like (it just won’t be quite so Australian). The fruity, fresh salad is the perfect complement to the meat.

7. BBQ Banana Split.

Don’t explode from excitement, but yes that did read “BBQ Banana Split”. In this recipe from I Quit Sugar: 8-Week Program Ambassador Rani, the trusty BBQ brings out the caramel sweetness of bananas, paired with divine chocolate sauce, peanuts and cherries.
