6 healthy butter substitutes (that are NOT margarine)

Written By Unknown on Monday 16 January 2017 | 16:10

We’re not afraid to say it, margarine is an insult to real food.

Butter, on the other hand, is one of our very best healthy fat friends.

Sometimes though, you just need a break from your buddies. Try some of these delicious (and healthy) butter substitutes next time you’re hankering for a slice of Paleo Veggie Bread.

1. Nut butter.

It’s little secret we’re a bit nutso for nut butter. Not only does it taste delicious, it’s packed with proteins and healthy fats to keep your satiated for longer.

If you’re buying nut butter at the supermarket, make sure you’re buying just that: nuts. It’s also super easy (and mostly cheaper) to make your own at home.

2. Tahini.

Allergic to nuts? Give tahini a try. Made from sesame seeds, it’s an excellent kid-friendly dairy-free source of calcium.

Pair with leftover roast veg or, if you’re feeling decadent, a bit of low-fructose fruit and a drizzle of rice malt syrup.

3. Hummus.

Hummus has definitely hit the mainstream in recent years, but we can easily see why. Traditionally made from chickpeas, garlic, tahini and extra virgin olive oil, it’s packed with stuff good enough to top any toast.

Whip up your own batch and get creative with extra ingredients like green veg, Pumpkin Purée or, if you like it hot, a few chillies.

4. Avocado.

You can enjoy a bit of smashed avo without throwing your financial future into question. Packed with healthy fats, potassium and fibre, a quarter of this fruit goes nicely with poached eggs and a squeeze of lemon.

5. Ricotta.

One of the great things about ricotta (aside from the fact that it’s delicious) is that it goes with both savoury and sweet toppings. Try it with blueberries, basil and almonds – you won’t be sorry.

It’s amaze paired with an egg and some wilted spinach – can anyone say Good Morning?
