- The new proposed Government standard that allows eggs to be labelled “free range” exceeds the voluntary stocking limit by more than SIX times.
- CHOICE Consumer Group has again taken up the fight against 213 million “fake” free range eggs.
- How can YOU know your eggs are really free range?
CHOICE Consumer Group has relaunched its campaign to make the free range eggs voluntary stocking limit (1500 hens per hectare) a mandatory standard.
While CHOICE was successful in pressuring Consumers Affairs Ministers to draft a standard when it first launched the campaign, the Government’s response was really disappointing. They have agreed on 10,000 hens per hectare – more than six times the Model Code!
According to CHOICE, this number means the chooks are cooped up “ in cramped conditions” and “not guaranteed to go outside”. The consumer also pays nearly twice the amount for the free range label.
Clearly, this sucks and we fully support the petition to change the standard before it’s made official. In the meantime, check out the list of free range eggs or the CluckAR app. Like an ethical Pokémon Go, it uses augmented reality to reveal how free range your eggs really are!
What do you think – is this “fowl” play? Should the Government reconsider?
