Sneaky Big Food never fails to shock us.
Between sponsoring science, monitoring anti-sugar public figures and jamming up to 25 teaspoons of sugar into a single drink, we’re often stopped in our tracks by their shenanigans.
We’ve rounded up a few of the craziest Big Food facts to share around the dinner table or the office water cooler. Don’t be surprised if someone’s Coca Cola comes out their nose (then gets poured down the sink) when they hear these!
1. “Zero sugar” tic tacs are almost pure sugar.
Counterintuitive, no? Due to their super-light weight, tic tacs are allowed to be labelled as 0g sugar per serving. They’re actually about 94.5 per cent sweet stuff.
2. A McDonald’s strawberry milkshake has more than 50 ingredients.
The Maccas website doesn’t offer much solace if you want to know what the heck they’re putting in their shakes. There’s a jumble of unpronounceable words, E numbers and something they just call “flavour”, which on it’s own contains up to 50 delicious chemicals.
Oh, and there’s 9.9 teaspoons of sugar in there, too. Plain ol’ strawberries are expensive, guys!
3. A single can of coke exceeds your daily sugar limit for the whole day.
You’ll down a touch more than 9 teaspoons of sugar in 330mL can of Coke. Which is more than the WHO recommends you eat across an entire day (6–9 teaspoons).
Is it any wonder than just one soft drink a day increases your risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease?
4. About half of the soft drink fountains in fast food joints have poo on them.
A team of microbiologists from Hollins University in Virginia wanted to find out exactly what made up the soft drink from U.S fast food joints. With 48 per cent of them containing fecal bacteria, they probably wished they hadn’t.
The cherry on top of that delicious beverage? Most bacteria found were antibiotic resistant.
5. There are more than 70 different names for “sugar” lurking in products at our local health food store.
We went on an expedition to one of the health shops in our area to find just how much sugar is hiding in so-called health foods.
Even we didn’t think we’d find 70 other names for fructose among the shelves of raw vegan cookies and organic muesli bars!
6. The average western diet is made up of about 60 per cent “ultra-processed” foods.
That means six out of every 10 things the average westerner puts in their body contains ingredients like artificial flavours, colours, emulsifiers and unhealthy oils. And a crapload of sugar.
In fact, about 90 per cent of our daily sugar intake comes from these so-called “foods”. Is it any wonder when you quit sugar, you naturally quit the processed crap and just eat real food? That’s kind of what we’re all about!
