6 quick and healthy hacks to get you through the holidays

Written By Unknown on Sunday 4 December 2016 | 21:07

As we head into holiday season, it can be all too easy to fall off the healthy eating wagon.

Between Christmas parties, end of year celebrations and general holiday frivolity, sugar and junky foods are coming for us whether we like it or not.

And while it’s okay to indulge occasionally, there are a few easy health hacks you can try to make sure you stay (mostly) on the low-sugar path.

1. Offer to bring dessert.

Off to a mate’s for Christmas dinner or drawing jobs for the office potluck? Put your hand up for dessert. Then you can whip up a deliciously decadent (but low-sugar) option (our specialty) and show everyone just how sweet a low-sugar life can be.

2. Sneak in extra exercise.

Don’t let your daily movement plan fall by the wayside in all the celebration fun. Sticking to your exercise routine will help you stay grounded and clear-minded.

If the calendar really is filling up fast, why not factor in some time to walk to or from work, or your next event? (You’ll also save on cab fare.)

3. Booze-free boozing.

It’s so important to stay mindful about drinking, especially around the holidays when the cocktails tend to flow freely.

Why not opt for delicious mocktails at your next end-of-year do? Let’s be honest, they’re miles better for the body and the budget.

4. Don’t skip main meals.

Cocktail party canapés can really get the better of us, so don’t rely on them as a substitute for lunch or dinner. We always whip up a nutrient-dense meal before we get the party started.

That way, if we do have a mini quiche or two we’re eating mindfully, not because we’re ravenously hungry and two Champagnes to the wind.

5. Make your own sauces.

In the Southern Hemisphere, party season is pretty much synonymous with barbecue season.

While we’re all for a bit of flame-grilled meat and fresh summer salad, store-bought condiments tend to be chockers with the sweet stuff. But not if you make your own (even tastier) versions at home.

6. Be comfortable saying no.

Remember that you don’t need to say yes to every single social invite that comes your way. You’ll burn yourself out trying to fit in Aunt Beryl’s breakfast buffet, Tanya from accounts’ holiday high tea and Christmas drinks with the in-laws all on the same Saturday.

Plan a few nights in to rest and reboot with a nourishing home-cooked meal and a replay of Love Actually. That way you’ll stay happy (and healthy) all holiday long.

What healthy hacks do you have to survive the holidays?
