Which butter is better? We taste tested 6 brands to find out

Written By Unknown on Wednesday 9 November 2016 | 21:07

To say we love butter would be the understatement of the year. We’re obsessed with it, slathered on toast, melted into pasta or glossing roast vegetables.

And it’s not just that it tastes delicious. Butter is rich in fat-soluble vitamins and also helps us absorb the vitamins in vegetables. A recent study of 636,151 participants also found zero association between butter consumption and heart disease. Take that, margarine!

Still, not butters are created equal (we learned this the hard way when we picked up a reliable-looking organic butter, only to find it was 30 per cent canola oil!). To find out which butter is better, we had to taste them for ourselves. Our jobs are very hard.

Note: To equally compare the brands, we tried salted butter exclusively. Also, this not a sponsored post – we paid for each and every butter, and all opinions are our own.

Lurpak Organic Slightly Salted Danish Butter, $7.95 for 200g.

We were excited to see that a big brand like Lurpak has an organic option. It’s more yellow than Lurpak’s non-organic options, which might suggest that the organic cows are getting more antioxidant-rich carotenoids in their diet.

Alyssa, marketing executive: “Definitely one of the best options available in supermarkets. I imagine this one slathered over sourdough toast with some Vegemite.”

Organic Times Salted Organic Butter, $7.75 for 250g.

Butter from 100 per cent organic, grass-fed and free-range cows? We’re sold. This butter is a quite a bit more salty than we’re used to, so we’d recommend it for seasoning and roasting over baking.

Matt, programs coordinator: “Very light and spreadable. I love the amount of salt in this one! Boom!”

The Milk Thief Organic Salted Butter, $5.25 for 250g.

We loved the sound of The Milk Thief from the get-go – organic, grass-fed and produced from milk from a farmer’s cooperative in Victoria. Luckily, the taste lived up to our expectations!

Meagan, operations manager: “This butter is so vibrant and creamy, with just the right amount of salt. But it is little on the hard side, so I’d leave it out to soften before spreading.”

Kerrygold Pure Irish Butter, $4.59 for 250g.

You can just imagine the Ireland’s lush green pastures when you taste this flavoursome butter. With 17,000 family-owned farms and an average of two cows per hectare, Ireland boasts some of the world’s happiest cows. The biggest downside to this butter is the carbon miles to get it here.

Rachel, writer: “It must be the luck of the Irish, because this butter is perfection. Creamy, salty but not at all overpowering. Jacket potatoes never tasted so good.”

Francelia The Original Salted Butter, $6.10 for 250g.

We were really intrigued by butter in a tin, and even more intrigued that it was churned from fermented sour cream. Aaand… it literally tastes like sour cream. Ultimately, the team was not a fan of its strong, unique flavour.

Hannah, recipe development assistant: “The packaging is super fancy but the actual butter tastes a little oily. Still, it might be a good one to crack open for a French dinner party.”

Pepe Saya Salted Butter, $8.99 for 225g.

This stuff tastes like it just came out of a cow – in the best way. With a complex and almost gamey flavour, it is produced with local NSW grass-fed milk, then fermented with probiotic cultures and hand-worked to create the perfect butter consistency. This is one for real butter connoisseurs.

Meg, food and recipes manager: “Perfection. Pepe Saya is so thick and creamy it’s almost like cheese. Beautiful flavour, amazing spreadability. As always Pepe, you’re THE butter for me!”
