Anyone who’s suffered acne – the painful combination of pimples, blackheads, whiteheads and oily skin – knows beating breakouts takes more than fancy cleansers and ointments.
What we put inside body can have just as much impact on our skin as what we put on top of it.
We all know by now that sugar face is a thing (and another excellent reason to give the sweet stuff the flick). But there are also some foods you can eat that may help reduce the symptoms of acne and keep your skin clear and under control.
1. Green tea.
We’ve said it before: tea is the answer to everything. Green tea in particular is super rich in antioxidants, which help reduce inflammation and fight acne-causing free radicals.
Plus, staying hydrated helps detoxify your body (including your skin) which can help to get on top of acne symptoms. Pass us another cuppa!
2. Brazil nuts.
Brazil nuts are an excellent source of selenium. In fact, just two of them get you to 100 per cent of the recommended daily intake.
Research shows selenium can reduce the severity of acne outbreaks, as well as help fight the free radicals that cause inflammation and premature aging. If Brazil nuts aren’t you thing, sardines, mushrooms and eggs are other good sources.
3. Salmon.
There’s nothing fishy about the benefits of omega-3. Found most commonly in fish like salmon, sardines and anchovies, these fatty acids are whizzes when it comes to reducing inflammation throughout the body. Which can do wonders for skin clarity.
Fish not your thing? You can also find omega-3s in wild rice, eggs and walnuts.
4. Spinach.
There’s oodles of magnesium in our favourite leafy green, which can help to balance out our hormones, combat stress and improve sleep. All of which has a major effect on the state of our skin.
Spinach and other green veg like kale, broccoli, asparagus and beet greens are also high in immune-boosting vitamins A, C and E, which can help fight infection and reduce scarring. Vitamin E in particular is the most abundant vitamin found in the skin and has extra special protective properties.
5. Sauerkraut.
Truth is, beauty begins in your bowels. More and more science points to the idea gut health plays an instrumental role in skin health, with a handful of studies suggesting a diet rich in probiotics can dramatically improve skin conditions like acne.
Make sure you’re getting plenty of probiotic foods like sauerkraut, full-fat yoghurt, kefir and kombucha. Your gut, your body and your skin will thank you for it.
Do you have any go-to acne-fighting foods?
