Which sausage is worthy of your next sizzle? Supermarket sausages tried and tested

It’s little secret that Aussies love their sausages. And we’re pretty huge fans here at IQS, too!

Just to be clear, we’re talking good quality snags here, not the ones with mile-long ingredients lists and additives like sweeteners, preservatives, regulators and texturised proteins. Really good sausages should be made up of meat, fat, veggies and spices. And that’s about it.

When selecting our snags, we’d usually head to the local butcher as the first port of call. That way you can speak to them about exactly what’s in your bangers. Failing that, the butcher’s section in bigger supermarkets is also a decent bet.

But if you don’t have time (or a friendly face to chat to), these five sausages are the best supermarket types we could find.

1. Nonna’s Free Range Chicken Sausages 560g. $11.05 (5 sausages).

Just like Nonna really would make! These sausages are packed with nothing but chicken, water, salt and spices. We like that they’ve used Rosemary as a natural preservative, too.

Alyssa, marketing executive: “The first chicken sausage I have ever enjoyed, I’m converted!”

Jorge, head of marketing (and resident meat connoisseur): “Chicken? Good! Sausage? Good! Juicy and full of flavour – what’s not to like?!”

2. Outback Spirit Pork Sausages with Kakadu Plum and Lemon Aspen 450g. $6.00 (6 sausages).

We are loving the use of native ingredients in these pork sausages. Super juicy and delicious, these got top points for taste from the whole team. We’d definitely like to see less preservative 223, but these are certainly one of the best pork options on the market

Megan, nutritionist and recipe developer: “I love love love these! I even went back for seconds, shhh! Move over Nonna’s, these are my new go-tos.”

Meagan, operations manager: “Drop the tongs! This sausage is delish and juicy. The pork is flavourful with a subtle sweetness.”

3. Cleavers Organic Paleo Beef Sausages 480g. $9.00 (6 sausages).

Cleavers got top points from us for super simple ingredients. There’s absolutely nothing nasty in here, just straight up meat, veg, fat and spices all bundled up in a natural casing. But the flavour just didn’t pop like the others.

Lee, social media manager: “I tasted this after the Beak and Sons Mediterranean sausages. While they don’t give you that same spicy kick, they do have a robust meaty flavour.”

Andre, chief technical officer: “This one was a bit too dry for my liking.”

4. Beak and Sons Beef Sausages with Mediterranean Herb 450g. $7.00 (6 sausages).

These babies were fragrant, juicy and tasted great. But we wish Beak and Sons had nixed the “Natural Flavour” ingredient and stuck with the roast garlic, black pepper, basil, oregano and parsley instead!

Hannah, recipe development assistant: “I really like the full flavour of these! They crisp up nicely and would taste delicious in any dish.”

5. Viana Veggie Bratwurst 300g. $8.25 (3 sausages).

One for the vegetarians at your next barbie! Veggie sausages usually come with an ingredients list as long as your arm, so we were happy to see some restraint in these.

Camilla, senior writer and editor: “I’d much prefer to see olive oil over sunflower oil, and I’d definitely give the raw cane sugar a miss! In terms of taste, they just didn’t quite measure up to the real deal for me…”
