If you’re trying to get pregnant or know someone who is, it might be worth looking at the fella’s sugar intake.
We all know too much sugar does a real number on our health. And as it turns out, the sweet stuff is no good for little swimmers’ numbers, either!
Why sugar (and particularly soft drinks) could be killing your sperm…
Numerous studies have shown that guys who drink more sugar-sweetened beverages, like soft drink, have a lower sperm count and poorer sperm quality than those who drink less.
It’s a pretty direct relationship, too. As the drink count went up, the sperm count and motility went down. Some guys who drank a litre of soft drink a day saw an almost 30 per cent drop in their little guys! Yikes!
While these studies mostly use Cola as their pop of choice (making some folk point to caffeine as the culprit) the scientists reckon it’s the sugar (and possibly the sugar-like sweeteners) that are having the effect. They didn’t see the same results from other caffeinated drinks, like tea or coffee (phew!).
… and ruining your man parts.
Separate studies have also linked sugary-sweetened beverages to erectile dysfunction. One suggested that certain pop ingredients damage arteries in the penis, making it more difficult to achieve and sustain an erection.
Other scientists have pinned soft drink consumption as one of a few poor diet choices that can lead to problems, er, down there.
See ya later soft drink!
Translation as we see it? The less lolly water (sugar OR artificially-sweetened) you drink, the healthier your sperm (and your sex life!) will likely be. If that’s not reason enough to give up the pop…!
