6 school snacks with DOUBLE the recommended daily sugar intake for kids

Written By Unknown on Monday 22 August 2016 | 23:01

The amount of sugar in some supermarket foods can be pretty shocking. Particularly when it comes to products marketed to mums and dads as “lunchbox friendly” or “canteen approved” school snacks.

Some snacks come packed with so much of the sweet stuff, just one serve contains more than double the World Health Organization’s recommended daily intake for younger kids (3 teaspoons)!

We went undercover at the supermarket to shine a spotlight on some of the worst offenders. Don’t worry though, we’ve got some ideas on what to feed hungry little mouths instead!

1. Sunbeam Energy Bites Date & Cacao.

We love cacao for its energy boosting properties. But unfortunately, most of the “energy” in these bites is coming from straight up sugar. A 50g serving contains 6.4 teaspoons of the stuff!

Bliss ball style treats are possible without the added sugar though! Case in point? Our yummy Fruit-Free Bliss Balls.

2. Golden Circle Pineapple Juice Box 250mL.

One of these lunch box-sized poppers contains 8.1 teaspoons of sugar. Fructose in a liquefied form (like juice) is particularly nasty, as it hits the system all at once and puts a lot of pressure on the liver to process it. Our suggestion? Stick to the H2O!

3. Arnott’s Snack Right Fruit Slice Wild Berry Biscuits.

Four of these weeny biscuits contain 6.9 teaspoons of the sweet stuff. Sure, the serving size is just two biscuits (3.5 teaspoons), but that’s still over the recommended daily limit for kids. And when they’re really are so tiny, would you really stop at packing two?

We’d always suggest making your own baked treats for the kids, like our Triple Coconut & Blueberry Muffins.

4. Sunbeam Sultana And Cranberry 6 pack.

Sorry to break it to you, but dried fruit is not a healthy snack. When you dry a fruit, you take out all the water, leaving behind all the sugar in a super concentrated form. A teeny 39g pack of these dried sultanas and cranberries contains a whopping 6.5 teaspoons!

We’d always prefer to eat our fruit fresh and stick to low-fructose options, like berries or kiwifruit.

5. Golden Circle Full A Fruits Tropical Smash Fruit Pouch.

“Full A Fruits”? Full A Sugar. 6 teaspoons to be exact. If you’re looking for a more creative way to get fruit into kids, give the packaged purees a miss and whip up a batch of our Raspberry Gummies instead. They’re packed full of gut-lovin’ Gelatin, to give little bodies an extra boost.

6. Gippsland Blueberry Twist Yoghurt 160g.

Blueberries are naturally pretty low in fructose. So we’re not sure how Gippsland managed to get 7.2 teaspoons of sugar in this single serve, even when you factor in the sugars coming from lactose.
