You don’t need to spend a fortune on astrologically-farmed eggs or magical moondust (yes, really!) to reap the benefits of a good superfood.
There are plenty of real, whole foods out there packed with amazing nutrients that are just as good as any expensive super powder or trendy bottled concoction.
From the humble oat to the too-often-discarded beetroot green, you can nab these five “superfoods” for less than $5!
1. Turmeric.
We bang on a lot about turmeric. But it’s not difficult to see why! This vibrant super spice is packed full of the powerful antioxidant curcumin, which studies have shown can help combat heart disease, Alzheimer’s, arthritis, depression and cancer.
Turmeric comes in at about $3–$5 for 100g fresh or 200g ground. Both options lend themselves perfectly to these seven tasty turmeric recipes.
2. Beet greens.
Usually bin your beet greens – those purple-green fibrous leaves that top off your beetroot? You might think differently about them if you knew they’re actually the fourth most nutritious vegetable you can eat! Seriously!
A bunch of beetroot will cost you between $3 and $5 (they’re usually even cheaper in the warmer months when it’s in season). Use the whole lot in this Red Beet Risotto with Garlic Sautéed Greens.
3. Eggs.
It’s really no wonder that eggs have earned the title of “nature’s multivitamin”. They’re an amazing source protein, with a bunch of B vitamins and antioxidants to boot.
You’re looking at around $5 for a dozen medium free rangers. Perfect for kick-starting your morning with an Eggy Muggin.
4. Chicken bones.
You can use leftover chicken bones to make nourishing, slow-cooked stock (something Sarah is a huge fan of!).
“Slow-cooking your stock releases minerals like magnesium, calcium and phosphorus and a whole bunch of gut-lovin’ gelatin and collagen in the process,” says our recipe developer and nutritionist Meg. “Stock offers amazing nutrients for all the cell walls in your body, as well as external bits like your skin and hair.”
You can grab chicken bones from the butcher for no more than $3 (sometimes the butcher will even give you them for free!). Try it out by whipping up a batch of our Easy Chicken Stock.
5. Oats.
There’s a smorgasbord of nutritional amazingness hiding in humble oats. They’re crammed full of fibre (and a surprising amount of protien) as well as a good hit of potassium, calcium, manganese, phosphorus, vitamin B1 and zinc. Studies have also shown they’re great for keeping our cholesterol levels in check.
Homebrand oats are the same as any fancy branded ones and will cost you less than $2 a kilo. Customise with your favourite topping for a very “Good Morning”! Check out our Porridge 3 Ways for some topping inspiration.
Will you give these “superfoods” a try?
