What to drink when you can’t drink pop! 5 delicious alternatives to soft drinks

Just so you know, this is a sponsored post. But the opinions are our own and we researched the topic and came to these conclusions independently.

When you quit sugar, you quickly learn that soft drinks are Public Enemy No. 1.

In fact, sugar-sweetened beverages alone have been linked to serious health issues like type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke and fatty liver disease.

It’s no wonder then that we recommend you avoid fizzy pop like the plague. And why we’re campaigning for a tax on sugar-sweetened drinks – even if it just starts the conversation about why soft drinks are so bad!

But what to drink if you give up Coke, we hear you cry! What can possibly taste better than that fizz? Never fear! There are plenty of healthy alternatives to soft drinks (that are a bit jazzier than plain ol’ water)!

1. Kombucha.

If you’re craving fizz, kombucha is your best bet. Made from fermented tea, it not only tastes great, but also contains good bacteria which can help improve gut health and rebalance your microbiome.

Plus Coke’s history has nothing on kombucha! This bubbling brew has been used in traditional medicine for thousands of years. And we love the peeps at Remedy Kombucha for sticking to this simple, time-honoured recipe (with none of the added nasties!).

“Before Big Soda produced sugar water, fizzy drink had much more humble beginnings,” says Remedy co-founder Sarah Condon. “We’re reviving this wisdom by making a traditionally brewed kombucha that is fizzy and energising, yet naturally low in sugar.”

Thirsty yet? Try kombucha straight or in our delicious mojito mocktail recipe.

2. Infused water.

It’s amazing what a little fresh fruit and a sprig of herbs can do to quench your thirst. Our shaker recipe contains a zing of fresh ginger, so it’s just like drinking a (healthy!) ginger beer.

3. (Nice) iced tea.

Unfortunately, commercial iced tea isn’t much better than soft drink. Lipton Classic Sparkling Ice Tea, for example, contains nearly five teaspoons of sugar per 250ml! This version skips all sweeteners, using the natural and refreshing sweetness of blueberries and lime.

4. Lighter lemonade.

With Beyoncé catapulting lemonade to the top of the beverage trends list (sorry not sorry, Coke), you can enjoy the drink with our virtually fructose-free recipe. With zesty lemon and a pinch of stevia, this one is great for entertaining. The kids will love it, too!

5. Turmeric tonic.

If you’re not feeling your best, this elixir is a great shot in the arm. Enjoyed hot or cold, a glass of turmeric tea can help calm inflammation and fight any bugs in your system.
