Sugary drinks (including juice) could more than DOUBLE risk of rare cancers

  • Participants who consumed sugar-sweetened beverages more than DOUBLED their risk of gallbladder and bile duct cancer.
  • Interestingly, this research not only includes soft drinks but juice, too!

A 13-year study on 70,000 adults shows that drinking just 400ml of sweet drinks a day could double the risk of gallbladder cancer. It could also increase risk of bile duct cancer by 79 per cent.

Unlike most studies on the sugary drinks, the study also included juice, which is marketed as a healthy beverage despite often having the same sugar content as soda. And while experts don’t yet know why sugar-sweetened beverages could increase the risk of these cancers, the fact that juice had the same effect as pop further points to sugar as the culprit.

This is just one of many recent, large-scale studies that show a link between disease and sugary drinks. The list so far also includes type 2 diabetes, heart disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and stroke.

As more and more science rolls in, we think it’s time the Australian Government got serious about a sugary drinks tax. How much more evidence do we need that they’re doing serious harm to our health?!
