5 free apps to make you healthier, one notification at a time

While hunching over your iPad all day or swiping through Facebook at 2am isn’t all that good for you, you CAN use the same technology to find a healthier you.

Health apps have stepped up to the plate in our modern-day quest for wellness. From pedometers to period trackers, this surprisingly sophisticated technology can help monitor your health and motivate you to take care of yourself.

The best part? Many health apps are free! (That’s got to be more budget-friendly than a gym membership.) Here are just a few of the IQS team’s favourites.

Plant Nanny.

Cute cartoon plants turn drinking water into a fun game! You can set the cup (or bottle) size and the app will alert you throughout the day to keep hydrated.

“Plant Nanny has completely changed me – I used to be chronically dehydrated. It’s motivating to watch the plant eventually grow and evolve (like a Pokemon) as you keep drinking. My skin is clearer and my eyes are brighter since using this app, mainly because I feel so guilty when my plants die!” – Rachel, writer.

This app tracks your daily activity without draining battery and shows daily, weekly and monthly progress (hourly if you upgrade to pro). Plus, it syncs previous data from Apple Healthkit, so you don’t have to start from scratch! Perfect if you don’t want to splash out on a fitness band.

“When you sit at a desk all day, it can be easy to forget to move around. I think the best feature of this app is it shows you exactly how much time you’ve actually been active during the day (yes, this can be a bit of wake-up call!).” – Alyssa, marketing executive.

Smiling Mind.

While we love yoga for calming the mind and energising the body, you don’t necessarily need a class to get your meditation on! This simple mindfulness app was developed by a team of psychologists to manage stress, anxiety and depression (and help all of us find a little calm).

“Usually I struggle to sit still for longer than five minutes. But somehow I can easily do a complete meditation with this app. The meditations can be tailored depending on your mood, energy and overall mind frame. It’s also really easy to use and I even managed to get my not-so-tech-savvy Mum on board!” – Matt, programs coordinator.

Sometimes you just need a little motivation, whether it’s getting up for the gym or making sure you have “me time” to sort yourself out before a big day. The Rock Clock (voiced by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) empowers you live your best life by sending daily motivational messages along with your morning alarm.

“This alarm lets you set specific goals and wakes you to the sound of Dwayne Johnson’s voice. My favourite alarm is his rendition of “Good Morning Sunshine”. Bliss! If that doesn’t get you up, nothing will.” – Mary, office coordinator.

The Bump.

This pregnancy app has some pretty cool features for mums-to-be – daily articles, real-time Q&As and a fun tracker that tells you how big the baby is in the size of different fruit. (Note: For women who are trying to get pregnant or just want to track their monthly cycle, Clue is also a fantastic app!)

“The Bump tells you about what your body is going through, from symptoms to hormone changes. It also has articles on all things pregnancy including what to eat when you’re not feeling like heaps of veggies (yes that happens!). My bub is an AVOCADO this week, as if that isn’t the best thing ever!” – Meagan, operations manager.
