5 ways to use sugar (that don’t involve eating it)

Written By Unknown on Thursday 9 June 2016 | 19:17

As we head into the first week of the I Quit Sugar: 8-Week Program, here are five waste-free things to do with all that sugar you’re not eating!

1. Make a scrub.

For a scrub gentle enough to use on your face and body, combine one cup of sugar with 1/3 cup of softened coconut or olive oil and a teaspoon of vanilla extract.

To use, wet your body with some warm water then rub the scrub over the area you wish to exfoliate. Finish by washing off with warm water and basking in the glow of your luminous skin!

If there’s a jar of honey lurking in your pantry (yep, we’re quitting that, too) make a face mask by combining two parts finely blended oatmeal, one part honey and one part coconut oil. Smooth on and leave to sit for a few minutes before rinsing off. Hello glow!

2.  Keep your flowers alive.

While sugar addiction isn’t doing you any favours, your flowers actually thrive on the stuff!

If you dissolve three teaspoons of sugar in two tablespoons of white vinegar and add to a vase of flowers, the flowers will bloom. That’s because the simple carbs in sugar can help flowers stay strong, while the vinegar kills bacteria and keeps the bugs at bay.

3. Stop your cookies from crumbling.

Keep your (sugar-free!) cookies fresh by storing them in an airtight container with a handful of sugar cubes. They’ll help absorb moisture, fight staleness and prevent mould from growing. This trick also works on other baked goods like bread and cakes.

4. Remove grass stains from clothes.

If you’re looking for useful things to do with sugar take it out of the kitchen and into the laundry to help with dirty clothes.

Just add two tablespoons of sugar to a little warm water and mix to form a thick paste. Rub it over the stained area (you might want to do fabric swatch test first) and leave for an hour. Wash it out with your regular detergent, then smile smugly as crisis is averted.

5. Dissolve grease or remove funky smells from your hands.

Get rid of heavy oils or strong odours by mixing a tablespoon of sugar with a squeeze of liquid hand soap and rubbing over your hands. It’ll leave your paws silky smooth to boot!
