What to do when you have a migraine

Being struck down with a migraine ain’t fun…

In fact, it usually means you’re bed bound until the pounding headache subsides. Whilst some people experience migraines frequently – which may require medication – there are a few things you can try to ease your discomfort the next time a migraine hits…

1. Lavender oil.

Inhaling lavender oil – or rubbing it on your temples – has been proven to provide some relief from migraine pain. A 2012 study showed that those who inhaled lavender oil for 15 minutes whilst having a migraine experienced quicker relief than those who inhaled a placebo. In fact, out of the 129 people who were experiencing a headache, 92 of those responded positively to the lavender oil treatment. Add a little lavender to your life by popping a few drops into an essential oil diffuser or rub some straight on your wrists!

2. Acupuncture.

Many people swear by acupuncture for the treatment of migraines. Acupuncture involves the insertion of fine needles into your pressure points – where the needles are inserted changes depending on what you’re being treated for. When the needle is inserted, it causes your body to release hormones, like endorphins, which are said to help relieve painful headaches and migraines. So, it could be worth a try next time you’re struck down!

3. Have a coffee.

Now, this might sound counterintuitive, but some people respond positively to a bit of caffeine when they’re in the midst of a migraine attack. One of the things a migraine does to the body is cause the expansion of blood vessels in the brain, which can lead to pain. Caffeine can help relieve this as it works to constrict your blood vessels, returning them to their normal size. So, if you haven’t tried having a coffee whilst you’re suffering from a severe headache, grab a cup of Joe and see if it helps! But, for others, caffeine can actually trigger migraines, so steer clear if you know this to be true for you.

4. Massages + yoga.

Research has shown that massages performed on the neck can provide relief from headache-related pain. Otherwise, certain yoga poses have also been shown to help migraine sufferers. As migraines cause disturbances in the nervous system, disrupting the circulatory system, the holistic nature of yoga is thought to be helpful in these instances.

5. Hot + cold packs.

Using temperature to help with migraine pain is another quick and easy treatment you can try at home. Ice packs are helpful in numbing the affected area – as they are anti-inflammatory – subsequently relieving pain. On the other hand, hot packs can also be effective as the warmth helps to relax muscles in your head. If you don’t have a heat pack, a warm shower or bath can also have a similar effect.

Note: if you’re continually suffering from migraines, it’s best to seek professional advice from a medical practitioner.
