The life hack that will maximise your health in 2018

Written By Unknown on Saturday 17 February 2018 | 10:00

Meal prepping is the no-nonsense life hack that you never knew you needed, until now.

Seriously, once you master meal prep, you’ll be set for success! Here are our top tips on how to make meal prep a cinch –we are the kings and queens of meal prep, after all!

1. Get your kitchen sorted.

Setting up your kitchen is the first step to success! But, while you don’t need to go out and buy an expensive blender or high-tech food processor to meal prep effectively, there are a few items that’ll make your life a whole lot easier if you’ve got them on hand.

  • Reusable containers. If you don’t already have a few of these stashed in your cupboard, invest in some leakproof containers to make storing leftovers super simple.  Opt for glass or stainless steel containers where possible.
  • A sturdy slow cooker. Trust us when we say that a slow cooker will become your culinary best-bud. This simple appliance uses very little electricity (slightly more than a light bulb) but will (magically) turn your ingredients into a tasty and satisfying meal.
  • A good knife. Save time slicing and dicing by investing in a good quality chef’s knife.

2. Embrace your freezer.

Instead of cooking from scratch every day, make the most of your freezer by stashing it with leftovers. By filling it with the good stuff, you’ll not only be less inclined to reach for junk when you get home from work starving, but you’ll also save time, money and reduce your food waste. Just make sure you label all your containers before you pop them away so you’re not left with unidentifiable containers filled with who-knows-what. And be sure to check out our bluffer’s freezer guide!

3. Use what you already have.

As mentioned above, meal prepping doesn’t require fancy appliances or big budgets, nor does it mean you have to buy a week’s worth of ingredients in a single shopping trip.

Instead, use what you already have! Chances are you’ve got some bits and bobs lying around in your fridge that haven’t surfaced in a while. If they’re still good, why not put them to good use? You’ll be doing your wallet and the environment a big favour. And besides, don’t people always say that things taste better the day after?

4. Go big on flavour.

Let’s be real, nobody looks forward to a soggy salad sandwich when lunchtime rolls around, so go big on flavour! Prepare meals that you’ll actually look forward to eating and your prepping efforts will be rewarded. Satisfied taste buds = satisfied you.

5. Ask yourself why you started meal prepping in the first place.

Was it to save money, time and energy? To reduce your food waste? Or perhaps you simply wanted to eat out less and maximise your intake of healthy, home-cooked meals? Whatever the reason, remind yourself of your “why” and you’ll be inspired to keep on keeping on. Make no mistake, it’s your personal motivation that will have you prepping like a #boss for months to come!
