We’ve all had to use antibiotics at some point or another, but it’s important to support your gut and increase your intake of certain foods whilst taking them!
As the effect on your gut health can be so extreme, IQS expert, Raj Barker, advises picking your battles when it comes to antibiotic use.
“Antibiotics have their place – their invention has saved countless lives. But when it comes to taking antibiotics, assess if you’re seeking a ‘quick fix’ (as they can be extremely effective) or if the ailment you’re experiencing can be addressed with professional nutritional and herbal support and some quality down time instead. One course of antibiotics can wipe out a huge number of gut microbes – which can then take over 12 months to restore – so picking your battles is essential.”
In order to give yourself a helping hand, increase your intake of these foods during and after a round of antibiotics…
-
Fermented foods.
Fermented foods are great for your gut health and can help to rebalance your gut microbiome following antibiotic use thanks to the amount of naturally occurring probiotics in them. Reach for sauerkraut, kimchi, kefir, kombucha and yoghurt during and after antibiotic use to help replenish your good gut bacteria.
-
Fibre.
Adding high-fibre foods to your diet is especially important after you’ve taken a round of antibiotics as research has shown that dietary fibre helps to stimulate healthy bacteria in the gut and reduce the growth of bad bacteria. But don’t eat it excessively whilst you are in the midst of an antibiotic course as in some instances, an increase in fibre can reduce the body’s ability to absorb the medication (as it slows things down, so to speak). Increase your consumption of oats, lentils, seeds, nuts and broccoli to up your fibre content following your antibiotic treatment instead.
-
Gelatin.
Our Gut Lovin’ Gelatin is super simple way to heal your gut following a round of high-strength medication as gelatin can help reduce any inflammation in the body that’s been exacerbated by the use of antibiotics. It works by helping to seal your gut lining and encourage the production of gut mucosa – which both help to keep your colon healthy so it can absorb nutrients and combat inflammation. Plus, there are a myriad of different ways to consume our Gut Lovin’ Gelatin, including this delish Off The Wagon Wheel slice!
Note: While it’s important to use them discerningly, some conditions are best treated with antibiotics and you should always take the full course if they’ve been prescribed. Always talk to your healthcare provider If you’re looking at treating a condition without antibiotics.
