5 cringe-worthy dishes from your mum’s childhood – made delicious!

Written By Unknown on Wednesday 24 January 2018 | 19:03

While some things from your mum’s era have probably come back into fashion (bell bottom jeans, anyone?), many popular recipes from back in the day have firmly stayed there…

And for good reason, too! Who actually wants to eat sugary jelly cake? Not us! But, to save you from missing out on some of the fun flavours your parents would have enjoyed back in their youth, we’ve rounded up these five recipes which have major throwback vibes going on.

Plus, they’re all filled with our Gut Lovin’ Gelatin – which is great for your gut health, helps to boost your metabolism and reduces inflammation in the body. So, you’re basically eating dessert and helping your health at the same time. That’s a win-win in our books!

1. Jelly cake.

While these wobbly cakes may have been popular during your parent’s childhood, we can’t say that we would go diving into these fluorescent cakes these days! But, a healthier alternative is always available and we think our Mango + Passionfruit Cheesecake is the perfect replacement. It has all the tropical flavours of the original but without any of the sugar or crap!

2. Jaffa Cakes.

We appreciate the flavour combination of Jaffa Cakes, but the original bickies contain so many ingredients – many that we can’t even pronounce! – and a heap of sugar. Ditch the processed originals and give our Jazzy Jaffa Cakes a go, which is the perfect whole food treat.

3. Wagon Wheels.

These chocolate-covered bickies may have been one of your mum’s fave treats as a kid, but unfortunately, they’re filled with less-than-stellar ingredients. Sugar, emulsifiers, gelling agent and vegetable oil – just to name a few! But, our Off The Wagon Wheel slice is just as good – we promise – and you’ll still get all of the nostalgic feels when noshing down on these without sugar hangover!

4. Killer Pythons.

Today’s Killer Pythons definitely aren’t as “killer” as they were back in the day, but they still contain a fair whack of sugar – 10.5 grams of sugar per serve! – so it’s best to steer clear of them. Our Speckled Sour Gummy Worms are made with kiwifruit and are just as satisfying to chomp down as a regular snack lolly.

5. Marshmallows.

While fluffy white and pink marshmallows might conjure up fond childhood memories, they are basically a ball of sugar. Yep, really! Instead, try our Coconut “Marshmallows” which are fructose free, delicious and nourish your gut. Yum!
