On Christmas Eve 2015, Seymour threw in the towel with sugar.
When we first shared his incredible transformation with you all, you loved it! And now, we’ve been lucky enough to catch up with Seymour again to see how he’s tracking without sugar, 19 months on…

I’m 35 kilos down, still living a sugar-free lifestyle, and LOVING it!
People who knew me before the weight loss often say they didn’t think I was that big, but the photos definitely prove otherwise, and so does my renewed confidence.
Now, the more I learn about fructose, the more determined I become to stay on track!
My original story has been shared over ten thousand times – which is insane! People recognise me on the street, at work – everywhere. And, I’m so proud to be the only male IQS ambassador.
From day one I was incredibly focused, and I continue to stick to two rules to stay accountable…
- I try not to buy “off the shelf” products – If I do, they must have less than 1.5 grams of sugar per serve (or even less). Any more and it stays on the shelf.
- I won’t buy products that have “sugar” listed as an ingredient (or any other alias name for the sweet stuff) – I have David Gillespie’s cheat sheet on my phone and on my desk at work so I’m prepared at all times.
I love to bake for my family once a week, and when I do I’ll only use a touch of rice malt syrup as a sweetener. That’s it.
I still cook recipes from the 8-Week Program, the IQS books and the website.
I love meals which are quick and easy to throw together, so in true Sunday Cook-Up style, I’ll make a bunch of brekkie’s and muffins, then freeze them for work days. Tuna and sourdough bread is a personal lunchtime work favourite.
To be honest, I haven’t really had any sugary slip-ups in the last year and a half.
Don’t hate me – but there’s been no midnight Ben and Jerry’s binges. I just have the mindset of “why eat something that doesn’t work for me and my body?”
Admittedly, sometimes I have takeaway and eat at restaurants with my family, but I try and opt for options with “no added sugar”. The only exception is that my young boy LOVES sushi, so on occasions I’ll eat sushi with him, and I’m okay with that! I want to normalise healthy choices, but not get him into the mindset of “restricting” food intake.
My son also loves getting hands-on in the kitchen. He even requests the IQS Anzac biscuits and “healthy ice cream” made from frozen fruit.
My energy continues to improve with my sugar-free lifestyle!
I work in an office, but I take every other Wednesday off to train for cycle races, riding at around 190km a week. Over the last six months, my weight has stabilised, meaning so has my power-to-weight ratio. I’m lucky enough to be surrounded by the magnificent mountain terrain in Canberra, so that proves to be a challenging, yet picturesque, training ground.
My new pre-race ritual is to have some IQS approved porridge – it’s easy and tasty.
I get a lot of comments saying ‘oh the weight loss can’t be IQS, he’s racing and training.
To that I say, well, yes I am exercising, but I’m not training more than I was 5–6 years ago when I was 15 kilos heavier. The 8-Week Program gave me the sugar-free tools that I desperately needed and this is what helped me become more disciplined in my training schedule. But of course, the lighter I become, the quicker and stronger I am too.
My next challenge is to lean down and tone up, to take my cycling to the next level.
I want to be as fit and strong as I can, for as long as possible. I’m not getting any younger but the people I race seem to be, so by looking after myself I’m doing the right thing for my life as well as my cycle racing.
I feel so much love for the IQS team.
The help I’ve received through reading and interacting with the IQS community on the 8-Week Program forums has been amazing! My family and friends are also a great support and a special shout-out to fellow IQS ambassador and good friend, Erin who truly inspired me from day one!
