7 sugar myths that need some serious busting

Written By Unknown on Wednesday 12 April 2017 | 19:09

Think sugar is okay because it’s natural? It’s time to set the record straight.

Believe it or not, we tackle that untruth every single day. And it’s only natural – there is so much conflicting information out there that’s it’s hard to keep up!

If you’re struggling to separate fructose fact from fiction, we lay out the seven BIGGEST sugar myths below. Someone call Mythbusters!

Myth 1: Sugar is okay because it’s natural.

What do sugar, arsenic, petroleum and tobacco all have in common? Sure they’re natural but they’re also all terrible for your health! Although sugar cane comes from the earth, science has also unearthed a host of health issues that come with it. And scarily, it seems like the sweet stuff and cigarettes may have more in common than you realise…

Myth 2: Sugar is the best source of energy.

While sugar can lead to hyperactivity, it can also take your blood sugar levels on a roller coaster ride, leaving you more tired than ever. The solution is to look for alternative sources of energy-rich foods, such as healthy fats and whole grains. These will keep your blood sugar levels steady and provide a sustained release of energy until your next meal.

Myth 3: Sugar substitutes are okay.

Replacing refined sugar with equally sweet no-added-sugar” treats like honey and date-based blissed balls won’t help you break the addiction. Although these foodstuffs have more nutrients than the packaged junk, your body will still deal with the fructose in the same way.

Myth 4: Sugar is the only way to socialise.

Our attachment to sugar is often both a physical addiction and an emotional one. The idea of Friday nights without margaritas or birthday parties without cake can be enough to break even the strongest of wills. But did you know you can quit sugar and have chocolate, eat out and even drink a glass of wine with dinner most nights? True!

Myth 5: Sugar doesn’t make you fat, fat does.

Still blaming fat for making you fat? It’s time for sugar to take some of the responsibility. In fact, science now puts the blame for your pot belly on fructose, letting the good kind of fat off the hook.

Myth 6: Sugar is a food group (so you shouldn’t cut it out).

You should never cut out entire food groups. It’s why we JERF and work with dieticians and nutritionists to ensure our Meal Plans feature all five government-recognised food groups. These are based around vegetables, fruits, whole grains, meats and dairy. But last time we checked, fructose wasn’t a recognised food group, so out it goes.

Myth 7: Sugar-free meals are boring and bland.

Worried that cutting sugar from your diet will leave you with nothing to eat? Well, the good news is that you can never have enough vegetables, spices and herbs. Add to that a good portion of healthy fats and protein, and you’ll never look back at your processed junk diet. Does this Stuffed Pork Tenderloin convince you?
