If you’re over 45, you’ll probably remember the daggy food trends of the 1970s. Some were truly the stuff of nightmares.
But that doesn’t mean we can’t learn from history.
This #throwbackthursday, we’re reinventing some of the 1970s recipes that defined the era of brown and orange. (And sneaking in some extra green for good measure.)
(Thanks to Bad and Ugly of Retro Food for the pics!)
1. Devilled eggs.
These bad boys were the elegant bite of every 1970s cocktail party. These days, they’ve been relegated to dag town.
While we don’t really have any problems with the classic recipe per se (the yolks are mixed with whole mayo, mustard, paprika and vinegar), why not jazz up your eggs with nutrient-dense greens instead? Cue our Green Bacon and Egg Cupcakes.
2. Prawn cocktail.
Whose parents (or grandparents) didn’t used to serve these literally drowning in store-bought Thousand Island Dressing (which is almost a quarter sugar!)?
We like to ditch sugary store-bought condiments altogether and opt for homemade. Try this Spicy Prawn Jar With Jalapeno Salsa for a fresh Mexican spin on the recipe.
3. Crepe Suzette.
Homemade pancakes are a delicious treat. But if we’re eating them, we’re loading them up with fresh fruit, nuts and yoghurt, not drowning them in ice cream and maple syrup.
They look much prettier this way, too! Exhibit A: These French Style Vegan Crepes.
4. Gelatin desserts.
We’ll be honest, we can’t fault the gut-lovin’ goodness that is gelatin. But some of the 1970s gelatin desserts and moulded salads are… questionable.
Luckily, we’ve been hard at work whipping up a bunch of new gelatin desserts that not only look freaking amazing, they taste absolutely delicious, too.
You’ll find them in our brand new eBook, The Mini Book of Gut Lovin’ Desserts. Grab your copy on pre-sale now and you’ll be the first the receive it when we launch on April 3 (just in time for Easter).
In the meantime, give this gorgeous Mango Passionfruit Cheesecake a try. You’re welcome!
5. Quiche.
Quiche can either be delicious, or a stodgy eggy bore. For flavour you can actually see, look no further than this amazing Salmon + Dill Quiche.
The sour cream in the actual base makes it so golden and crumbly, you’ll definitely be back for another slice.
6. Fruity chicken.
Duck l’Orange may have managed escaped dag status (maybe because it sounds so fancy), but pineapple chicken (or in the case of this recipe, banana chicken?!), is well as truly a relic of a past era.
Until now. These Lemon Pineapple + Herb Roasted Chook Legs are crispy AND juicy, with just the right amount of natural sweetness coming from the fruit. Oh, and they smell amazing.
