“Am I dying?” + 13 other questions you ask yourself when you quit sugar

Written By Unknown on Thursday 12 January 2017 | 19:09

Quitting sugar can feel like the stepping into the great unknown – pretty exciting, a little scary.

But, with more than a million people quitting sugar on our books and 8-Week Program, you’re not alone!

In fact, we pretty much know exactly what you should expect when you quit sugar, right down to the questions you’ll ask yourself when you’re in the throes of a Tim Tam craving.

Fellow quitters, how many of these questions have you asked yourself?

1. Can I actually do this?

Yep.

2. Like, really?

Did you know 1,180,000 people (and counting!) have quit sugar with us? You’re in safe hands. You got this.

3. What, no fruit?

Don’t worry. We only cut out fruit (and all other fructose) for five weeks so your taste buds can readjust. In the meantime, there’s sweet potato.

4. What about wine, please tell me there’s wine?

Wine is usually very low in fructose. As is beer. But don’t swap one addiction for the other. Stick to a glass with dinner.

5. What, that contains sugar, too?!

You’ll be very surprised to know that even salad dressings are packed with fructose. MIND BLOWN. But as long as you stay away from processed foods, you’ll be fine.

6. Why am I doing this to myself?

Excessive fructose is strongly linked to health issues including obesity, type 2 diabetes and heart disease. This is one of the best things you can do for yourself. It’s just going to hurt for a bit.

7. Is this a withdrawal headache or an aneurysm?

Many experience sugar withdrawal symptoms, like headaches and joint pain. It will pass. Take a bath, drink some herbal tea or meditate the pain away – but do see a doctor if you are concerned.

8. Why do I want to murder everyone?

Mood swings are also a normal part of quitting sugar (it has something to do with your brain’s withdrawal from an addictive substance). Unless you’ve always had these urges… in that case… stepping away now…

9. Why does Brenda have to bring cake into the office?

Some people won’t be so understanding. In fact, they might even try and push sugar on you. Simply explain that it’s just about eating real food and you’ll soon be in total control of your cravings. Or throw salad at them – that works, too.

10. Is this how I’ll die, alone and surrounded by kale?

Hey, there’s no reason to eat kale if you don’t want to – our meal plans are designed to be flexible. Have some halloumi instead. And don’t forget to pop into the community forums for some extra support.

11. Hang on, did I just go a whole day without craving anything sweet?

And just like that, you’re through the rough patch! No more rabid cravings, no more hunger pangs, no more mood swings. Life is sweet.

12. OMG, why does fruit taste so sugary?

Once your taste buds have reset, you’ll be surprised by how sweet fruit and even vegetables taste. You’ll also wonder how you ever ate so many sickly cakes, chocolates and soft drinks.

13. Are my jeans a little bit looser?

Weight loss is just one of the benefits people commonly experience when quitting sugar. You might also see clearer skin, more energy and a bank of new cooking skills (definitely that last one!).

14. Why didn’t I do this earlier?

Once you taste food freedom, you’ll never go back. Now go forth and spread the sugar-free word, you champion!
