8 surprising foods with sugar as the first ingredient

Written By Unknown on Thursday 9 June 2016 | 23:34

It’s probably little surprise that the main ingredient in Nutella is sugar (unless of course you mistakenly believe it’s hazelnuts!). But the sugar content in some other foods never fails to shock us.

These eight foods are all marketed as “healthy”. But if you look at the ingredients list you’ll find sugar takes first place, which makes it the most abundant stuff in there.

A word of warning: Food manufacturers sometimes use different names for sugar to make it a little tougher to determine exactly how much is in your food. So as well as the more obvious table sugar, look out for ingredients like dates, honey or fruit juice

If they’re the first ingredient (or even the second or third) listed on the label, then your high-sugar snack is probably not as healthy as you believe.

1. 247 Yoghurt Covered Blueberries.

This low-fructose fruit is usually one of our favourites. But covering it with a sugar-based yogurt compound undoes most of its health benefits and leaves us “berry” unimpressed.

2. Only Organic Strawberry Yoghurt Kindy Rice Cakes.

Despite the healthy claims on the label (Organic! Wholegrains!), cane sugar is the first ingredient in these toddler-targeted rice cakes.

A single packet alone exceeds the daily three teaspoons of sugar recommended for kids.

3. Arkadia Vanilla Chai Instant Tea.

What this “98 per cent fat free” tea lacks in fat, it makes up for in sugar. In fact, the white stuff is the first ingredient.

And that’s before you make like Adele and add a couple of extra teaspoons of your own to this already sweet sip.

4. Nice and Natural Fruit Strings.

Like many children’s lunch box snacks, these fruit strings are little more than undercover candies. The first ingredient listed is 65 per cent reconstituted fruit juice. Gram-wise, they’re more than half sugar in total.

5. Lee Kum Kee Teriyaki Beef Sauce.

Using this marinade to make your own Asian meals at home may seem quicker and healthier than ordering takeaway, but probably not if the first ingredient is white sugar. It makes up almost 50 per cent of this entire sauce.

6. Leda Bar Banana Bread.

This baked banana snack is dairy, gluten and egg free. But it seems the memo stopped short of sugar free. As well as listing dates as the first ingredient, it’s also made with dried banana, fructose and sultanas.

7. Nu-Vit Original Muesli Gluten Free.

Unfortunately, commercial gluten-free products are often pumped full of sugar. This muesli is a prime example. The first ingredient is sultanas, but it also features prune juice, apple juice, dried apricots and sugared paw paw.

8. Fisherman’s Friend Throat Lozenges.

These lozenges promise to help soothe a dry throat, but they’ll probably do a lot more damage to the rest of your body along the way. The first ingredient is sugar. In fact, it makes up close to 90 per cent of the product. That’s not so soothing!
