Apple cider vinegar – that strange-looking yellow stuff sold in health shops – is a big deal in the wellness world.
But you may still be wondering what the heck it is, or why it’s so much better than the clear stuff you might douse on your fish and chips. Wonder no further! Here’s our handy guide.
The health benefits of apple cider vinegar.
Apple cider vinegar is… you guessed it… vinegar made from apple cider. The fermentation process removes all the sugars from the apples, giving us all the health benefits without the fructose.
- Bloat buster: Ever feel sluggish after a big meal? ACV can fix that! Our in-house nutritionist Meg Yonson says: “Apple cider vinegar stimulates acid secretion in the stomach, which helps break down your food and absorb nutrients.
- Blood sugar balancer: One study found that two teaspoons of ACV taken before a meal reduced insulin response by 34 per cent in insulin-resistant participants.
- Antifungal friend: From keeping your mouth squeaky-clean to battling bad bugs in your system, ACV is has promising antifungal properties.
- Fat fighter: Animal studies have shown ACV’s potential in lowering both body fat and cholesterol levels.
- Banish bad breath: Its fresh flavour and antifungal properties makes ACV a great natural alternative to morning mouthwash.
Why we drink it for breakfast.
A tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in the morning is a great way to start the day. Aside from being a great morning breath remedy, the acid could also help kickstart your digestive system.
“Personally, it’s gets my appetite going (in the morning) and it gets my juices fired up ready for food (before dinner),” says Sarah. “Having an autoimmune disease, I lack the crucial HCL (hydrochloric acid) required for proper digestion. ACV kicks in and does the job of the missing acid.”
If you’re worried about what all that acid will do to your teeth, there are a few things you can do to preserve your pearly whites.
“Drink your morning ACV in water through a straw and rinse your mouth with water immediately afterwards,” says IQS expert and holistic dentist, Vanessa Platt. “Also, don’t brush your teeth for one hour after the ACV drink, as it takes about 55 minutes for the PH levels in your mouth to balance again.”
