5 foods that improve eyesight

Written By Unknown on Tuesday, 14 June 2016 | 13:21

Find yourself squinting at your screen despite having just had your eyes checked?

Here are five foods that support eye health and can help to improve your eyesight.

1. Carrots.

Bugs Bunny must have had 20/20 vision, because the cliche about eating carrots in order to improve your eyesight is actually true.

That’s because this root veggie is full of beta carotene, a naturally occurring pigment that nourishes eyes. They’re also loaded with vitamins A, C and E, which as the name suggests are “ace” in reducing macular degeneration – a condition that causes vision loss.

2. Leafy greens.

Veggies like spinach and kale are packed with lutein and zeaxanthin.

Much cheaper than a pair of polarised Ray Bans, these antioxidants act like a natural sunscreen for your eyes and can help protect your retina from harmful UV rays.

3. Gelatin.

A diet rich in gelatin can help with the absorption of many vitamins – including those vital for eye health.

While one mystic infamously recommended serving your gelatin with grated carrots, we’ve got our eyes on this Off The Wagon Wheel Slice instead.

4. Salmon.

As well as a host of other health benefits, studies show that eating foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids can improve eyesight. That’s because these are anti-inflammatory and may help reduce age-related macular degeneration.

Find these fatty acids in oily fish like wild salmon, mackerel or (Sarah’s favourite) sardines.

5. Turkey.

Next time thanksgiving rolls around, you might want to give thanks to the turkey for its eyesight improving properties, too!

As well as vitamin B (which can keep eyes from drying), turkey meat is rich in zinc, which may help prevent cataracts.

Do you have any suggestions for foods that improve eyesight?
