New health education program will prevent obesity from birth

Written By Unknown on Sunday 9 April 2017 | 18:19

  • Parents of newborns will be taught basic lessons, like not giving babies soft drink.
  • This is part of a new push to reduce childhood obesity by five per cent by 2025.

Parents will be “recruited” in NSW maternity wards for a new health education program to prevent childhood obesity.

NSW Health’s new initiative will target the parents of 1000 newborns in Sydney and the Murrumbidgee region to receive health information via letters, texts and phone calls.

The program focuses on basic nutrition rules, such as pureeing veggies and banning soft drinks for babies (as well as screen time until they are two years old).

While we’re happy that NSW is doing something to curb childhood obesity (unlike the national policy makers), we do wonder how maternity wards will target participants. As we know, health comes in all different guises!

We hope the program is successful enough to offer to ALL new parents. It’s our kids’ future at stake after all.

What do you think of this new program?
