- A shocking report reveals 7.6 million new cases of disease will be diagnosed by 2035.
- Four million cases of type 2 diabetes and 670,000 cases of cancer could be prevented with weight loss.
- Health lobbies are calling for restrictions on junk food advertising and sugar content in food.
It’s estimated that 40 million adults in Britain will be overweight or obese by 2035 – a startling statistic that comes with a cluster of health problems.
The Obesity Health Alliance (OHA) believes that 4.62 million new cases of type 2 diabetes and 1.63 million cases of coronary heart disease will arise due to obesity within the next twenty years.
They also estimate that cancer rates will treble, with more than 57,000 people developing cancer EACH YEAR because of their weight.
Worryingly, the problem could even be understated, since other obesity-related conditions like high blood pressure, liver disease, osteoarthritis or chronic kidney disease were not included in the calculations.
The OHA (which includes heavy-hitters like the British Health Foundation, Cancer Research UK and Diabetes UK) is now calling for Government intervention, like bans on junk food television advertising from 6am to 9pm daily.
They also want industry limits on sugar content in foods, in order to halve the UK’s consumption. However, it’s rumoured that the Government is only aiming for a 20 percent reduction (if that).
When the science shows the unquestionable links between sugar consumption, obesity and a raft of other related health issues, is 20 per cent good enough to turn around such a worrying trend? We’re not convinced.
What do you think of this study? Should food companies be forced to reduce sugar in their products?
