If you’ve decided to quit sugar, you may have more in common with your favourite celebrity than you think!
Joining the growing list of stars who have cut sugar from their life, here are five new celebs who have jumped on the sugar-quitting train. And their tips on how they did it.
1. Rosie Huntington Whiteley: Focus on the benefits.
Her face is her fortune, so supermodel and actress Rosie Huntington-Whiteley gave up sugar to save her skin.
Rosie cut out the white stuff on the advice of naturopathic doctor Dr Nigma Talib. While she admits it was tough, “once you change some things in your diet and you remove certain things, you’re going to see a difference in your skin and a difference in your well-being,” she says.
“It’s really been transformative for me. I can feel it in my skin, I can feel it in my body … I feel strong and I feel energised.”
2. Megan Fox: Just JERF instead.
To keep up with her roles as a new mum and star of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, Megan Fox has also given sugar the flick.
Instead, she focused on Just Eating Real Food and replacing the white stuff with more nutrient-dense choices.
According to her trainer, Harley Pasternak, Megan maintains a low-sugar diet, but doesn’t go to any extremes. ”She eats carbs. She just eats the right carbs. She eats three meals and two snacks a day. She’ll have protein, fibre and healthy fat every meal. She is living a low-sugar lifestyle.”
3. Kobe Bryant: Don’t drink your sugar.
LA Lakers legend Kobe adopted a low-carb, high-fat diet and eliminated packaged foods and sugar in the process. The result? “I feel like I can run all day long,” Kobe says. “A lot of that has to do with diet and being committed to it, and watching what I eat.”
The basketballer even swapped sugary energy drinks for bone broth. “It’s great for energy and inflammation,” he says.
4. New Zealand Rugby Union Team: Fear no (good) fat!
The All Blacks tried a similar sugar-free diet to Kobe at last year’s rugby union world cup. And they’ve stuck with it.
According to their strength and conditioning coach Dr Nicholas Gill: “I would say we are in a low-sugar environment. That’s a big change. We now have nuts on the sideline after training, not lollies. We have healthy fat on hand when we need it.
“We go through six to seven tins of coconut oil a week. We travel with peanut butter and nut butters for the guys to use in smoothies and wherever else it can fit in.”
Now we just have to hope that they quit their endorsement of sugary sports drinks, too…
5. Halle Berry: It’s never too soon to start.
As well as changing her own eating habits after being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, Halle realised how important it was to educate her children about their diet, too.
“I’m so aware of how much sugar we consume. I’ve very conscious of what my children eat and how much they take in,” she told British Marie Claire. “People think it’s hard to cut out sugar, but it can be done. You just have to put some effort in.”
Do these celebrity sugar quitters inspire you to give up the stuff for good?
